On Saturday July 26 we rented a car from Heathrow and headed North to the lake district. We expected a load of traffic but got by okay! We stopped for lunch in a cute town called Warwick on the way up, and ate in the beer garden of a local pub called the Tilted Wig. They were roasting a hog on the spit for a bbq later that night and we wish we could have stuck around for it! It happened to also be a market and folk dancing festival the day we were there (I love the random festivals that go on in the UK all throughout the year!) and we watched a cool dance troupe do one folk dance. I thought they looked like crows in their black feathery costumes. It was a couple hours drive to north England’s lake district (lake Windermere to be exact) where our first hostel was located at the top of a hill overlooking the lake and valley. It was soooo beautiful, and quiet. Except for the random bleating of sheep every once in a while.
Syd and I went for a hike down the hill to get a couple more provisions at a local mini-mart. On the way back up with our bags a guy in an old army jeep stopped and asked us if we wanted a lift. It was an army jeep from America that was sold to the British army and used in service in 1942. He had a military shirt on so we felt safe somehow. It was less than a 3 minute ride up to our hostel, but it saved us a hike uphill with bags. What a random and neat experience!
There were only 4 tables outside on the veranda so we had a lovely homemade chicken & spinach salad for dinner and then made a makeshift table out of crates and a cutting board so that we could play cards. ;o) That night we both won a hand of euchre (Syd & I vs. the parents) and looked forward to a rubber match the next night.

I just saw your picture of the, folk dancing.
It is called morris dancing and that particular troop does border morris, which is what my parents do!! They just did a morris tour in England with that troop, or one that looks a lot like them!
