Camping in the Bush

DSC_2530

Yesterday we caught an early Greyhound from Brisbane (aka Brisvegas) up to Noosa.  Noosa is a little holiday town geared more towards Auzzie's weekend beach holidays rather than to the backpacker scene, which was a nice change for us.  After enjoying a fabulous pizza & beer special at a nearby Italian cafe, we grabbed the shuttle to our next accomodation:  Gagaju Bushcamp.

I think since a) Astrid & I are the outdoorsy type and (b) since we experienced BushFest back in 2006 (thanks June & Ty!), we were really excited and pleased with the rusticness of the place.  It was actually cleaner and nicer than I was expecting... and even had showers :)  Most of the people that go there do a 3 day canoe trip package, but Astrid & I couldn't quite fit that in (and we thought it might pale in comparison to our Algonquin trips) so we just went for the night (Rob, the British half of Laura & Rob who we met in England and now are great friends, recommended it from his Oz trip several years back).  The whole place actually made me think this would be something you would find in the bush near Lowbanks :)

The main area of the camp was very cool -- a nice TV lounge with an excellent selection of DVDs, a cool, albeit somewhat small, kitchen area with a few tables to sprawl out on... then a lounge area with a big table great for playing cards, a "bar" area complete with a dart board (though the bar didn't serve alcohol, so its more like the bar one of your buddies has in his basement (you know I'm talking about you Page :)), and finally a fire pit just adjacent to all of this.

Our dorm was a cute little tent/canvas cabin thingy that had 6 rickety wooden bunks with canvas  hammocks/bottoms and a little matress on top.  The whole place is fairly open-air, but they light mosquito coils each night which did a pretty effective job of keeping the bugs away.

After having a quick dip in the Noosa River (which is 20m away, salt water, and tidal), we went for a walk around the area.  Astrid was keen to try and spot a Koala -- which we didn't find -- though we came across 5 Kangaroos having an afternoon bite to eat -- so cool to see them in the wild!  We didn't want to get too close but did manage to snag the following pics.  The big one (I'm assuming the male of the group) must have been over 7 feet tall (he was certainly taller than me, even hunched over).

DSC_2558Oh, and Dad -- there were some free roaming cows with giant horns right neat where we say the 'roos.
