My birthday in Oz was awesome? What more could I ask for? A beautiful sunny day lazing by the lagoon (above) with our Irish friends and playing frisbee, followed by a romantic dinner with my man? ;O)
Syd took me out to a nice seafood restaurant in Airlie Beach called Shipwrecked. We had a corner table overlooking the ocean. It was a serious step up from the hostel slumming meals we have been used to. I tried the local baby lobster called 'moreton bay bugs' while Syd ordered chili prawns. It was nice to go out for dinner like that again. Made us forget that we have been backpackers for 2 months.
We spent a couple hours there enjoying the tasty sangria and the soft cool breeze coming off of the bay. Did I mention that we shared a piece of macadamia mango cheesecake for dessert? It was deadly. ;o)
But you wouldn't think that I would let the night end all mellow did you? Oh no, that was just the beginning! We met up again with our Irish friends (Cathal, Sarah and Elaine) and proceeded to get our drink on, and a few games of pool while we prepared ourselves mentally for the next step - the infamous Foam Party! That's right, the kind of party you always hear about and secretly wonder if its worth checking out, but never know where it takes place. Well I lucked out that it took place in the night club of our very own hostel!
We first watched people come out with white 'soap' boots (that we called uggs) and then others came out completely froth-covered from head to toe. We decided to 'take the plunge'. Check out the guy behind me - almost invisible in the foam! It was very strange being right under the soapy waterfall because the soap just envelopes you and suffocates you. After one go under the stream we decided to stick to the outer part of the soap pool and dance in the foam that came up to our waist. I had to wear my flip flops on my hands lest I lose them forever in the foam, or fall on my back because they make it too slippery! It was crazy. I couldn't help thinking that we were dancing in a car wash - because that's exactly what it smelled like! Of course we snapped some choice shots and then left the party (one can only take so much soap) and walked around town to shake it all off.
It was certainly a memorable birthday in Oz!
