Now that we are finally in Australia we can enjoy what its famous for - surfing! At the moment we are in a surf camp called SpotX that is owned by Mojo surf (get your mojo on).
We tried surfing for 1 day first from Sydney with a company called Waves, and we were picked up by the epitome of surf dudes. Both had bleach blonde hair, talked like they were stoned, and were super bronze...oh, and of course they were both hungover from the night before and barely comprehensible. ;o)
They brought us out to a beach that they drove 4x4 down the beach to find a sweet wave spot. First we practised on the sand "the 4 steps to getting up on the board", and then spent all day trying (and succeeding) to catch waves. It was quite difficult actually. You battle through harsh waves that continually knock you back as you walk out to get past the white waves on the shore. Then, you watch the rolling green waves to find the one that is just about to crest, then you turn your board around, paddle like hell, and then hope that the wave picks you up so you can 'ride it home'.
Syd especially enjoyed riding it home on a bogeyboard (on Manley Beach before heading back to the city centre)!
The two days at Mojo surf camp provided smaller waves that we found easier to surf, and the training from 2 lessons there and a couple more hours of practice paid off. Interestingly, the surf guides at surf camp had 2 more completely new techniques of how to stand up on the board...so obviously surfing is a laid back sport. I have become pretty good at catching waves, but struggle to get up standing still as its quite a balancing act. Syd is quite good at getting up now, he just needs to learn to slow down a bit and he'll get up more often. There were pics taken of us actually surfing, but we are cheap and didn't buy them...so you'll just have to take our word for it.
The camp itself was very chill. They served us breakfast, lunch & dinner and everyone partied all night in the lounge/outdoor area with their own alcohol. The staff even drive to the bottle shop every night so people can stock up for evening fun. There was a great campfire pit with 'surfboard' benches where one staff member (from Kingston Canada) would play top 40 tunes on his guitar every night. Good times!
